Six Boxes to Beijing A journey to China in the Olympic Year 2008
6 German artists, their hand luggage and the bare necessities

In the Olympic Year, the Olympic Fire is carried from its place of origin in Greece to the place of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. After passing through many countries and cities, it flames up as the Great Flame of Olympia and burns during the period of the Olympic Games in August 2008.

Many people from all over the world travel to Beijing and witness the 2008 Olympic Events. 6 German artists create 6 art boxes. They carry them to Beijing in July 2008. The 6 hand-luggage-sized Art-Boxes will be exhibited during the Olympic Events.
The Olympic flame symbolically represents the Olympic Spirit, fair play and co-existing peace of all nations. In a similar way, world traveling, visiting and exploring different cultures, inter-cultural communication has become the spirit and major interest of world population in the 21st century.

A bilateral dialog between 6 artists from German State of Rheinland-Pfalz and 6 Chinese artists had already been initiated in 2007 when at the Kunsthaus Metternich, Koblenz “Dialog One: East-West” was organized under the patronage and cooperation of Beijing Cultural Development Foundation and The ARK, Rheinland-Pfalz. To continue the success of the first dialog, the German artists decided to continue the dialog, travel to Beijing in 2008 and contribute with a special project. For the purpose of their dialog journey to China, the 6 German artists transform their hand luggage into traveling communication art objects. The personal effects, bare necessity of life, which usually are carried in hand luggage during travel, become the bare necessities of art at the time when international traveling is tremendously challenged by a complexity of checking procedures involved. The dimensions of the 6 boxes have been fixed as the standard size of hand luggage in air travel, but materials, layout and design of the boxes is to be decided by the artists, individually.

The journey to China in the Olympic Year 2008 commemorates both the Sprit of Olympia and the spirit of traveling. In this way, the project becomes a gift of art to the Olympic host country China. The Beijing Cultural Development Foundation inaugurates its 2008 International Art Exchange Program in Beijing with this special project “6 Boxes to Beijing - A journey to China in the Olympic Year 2008”.
